Student Style: Our Creative Director in Quarantine With Her Own Creations

By Megan Mahoney

This article is part of our Student Style series, in which we aim to highlight our student body’s diverse sartorial expression

I just quarantined on Salt Spring in British Columbia and worked with somewhat of a capsule closet, since I had one or so suitcases worth of clothing with me. I mainly had just my go-to items, including lots of comfy clothes made for staying indoors, but most of my staples are things I have actually made myself. Although none of my outfits were particularly out of the ordinary for me, choosing DIY pieces was a fun guide to structure my outfits around and led to a few interesting pairings that I might not have made had my full wardrobe been available to me. Although these outfits were tailored for days in quarantine which involved limited activity, I could see myself wearing similar outfits while on campus (particularly post-shower, wear to dinner vibes), since I, like much of the student body, am usually in lounge wear at this point in the day. Designing and creating content related to fashion is one of the reasons I joined Clover, so I figured capturing five outfits which incorporated something I made was only fitting.

Monday

Monday was the first day of my internship, where I learned how to drape on a dress form and draft patterns, so I wanted to be able to crouch down and move with ease. I stuck with a simple and comfy monochromatic outfit, pairing a thrifted v-neck cashmere sweater with a pair of blue sweatpants that I recently sewed. The fabric of the pants ended up being a bit thinner and shinier than I expected, but they are incredibly comfortable and perfect for lounging in.

Tuesday

The sun came out so I (ambitiously) threw on a pair of biker shorts with a sweatshirt. I drew several graphics and transferred them to this sweatshirt and now it is one of my go-to pieces. In the afternoon, we went kayaking so I changed into a pair of blue jeans. Very simple outfits, but extremely comfortable and the bright colors added a nice pop with the lovely weather we had.

Wednesday

In an effort to increase my energy through having a more put together outfit (with real pants), I took on the challenge of styling my cow print PJ set that I sewed this summer. Although it is somewhat warm here on the water, I figured the awkwardness of wearing the PJ shorts was not worth the challenge nor chills. Instead, I worked to include the PJ top as a layer, going with this black sweater, and wore the collar tucked in, or occasionally out (often unintentionally), with the PJ top coming through. On the bottom I wore my favourite pair of bootcut black jeans that I got in Amsterdam a couple of years ago. I never would have chosen to incorporate this top into an outfit, but I found that layering it this way was a nice addition to an otherwise all black outfit.

Thursday

With cooler temps, I stole back this fleece pullover that I sewed for my boyfriend for Christmas this year. It is made from a fabric similar to Patagonia’s synchilla products and has a similar cut. Throughout the activities of the day, wearing black leggings for a little hike on the property and thrifted Carhartt jeans that are thick but easy to move in for some yard work. For dinner, I changed into a slimmer pair of light wash jeans. Otherwise, I just stuck to my standard gold jewelry and threw my hair up.

Friday

To celebrate the start of the weekend, I spent the evening in the hot tub, watching the sunset and enjoying wine and snacks. Although not pictured up close for modesty’s sake, I wore my side-tie black bathing suit bottoms that I sewed this summer. I also challenged myself to go in the ocean every day during quarantine and was successful.
