Student Style: Our Writers in Four Days of Details

By Joe Hanlon and Annaliese Terlesky

This article is part of our Student Style series, in which we aim to highlight our student body’s diverse sartorial expression.

Joe: “When considering clothes to buy or an outfit to wear I usually think about the past and future before making a choice in regards to the present. If an article of clothing reminds me of a particularly good time or a fond memory, I am more likely to get a lot of use out of it. In terms of the future: will it last me a long time, even with heavy wear? I try my best to only commit to well-constructed items, so that I never have to replace a garment. The prospect of a beautiful, well-made piece with happy associations usually means I will treasure it for a long time.”

Annaliese: “One realization I came to while choosing outfits this week is that I own too much floral and should probably cut back on that, but I think this pattern speaks overall to my love for detail. When I’m shopping, whether in person or online, I’m most drawn to the pieces that make me look more than once and patterns that are engaging and distinct.”

Joe: “Once I have purchased a new piece and added it to my closet, outfit planning comes in real-time as I get ready each day—I choose what I feel inspired by, and select combinations of pieces that I believe will look interesting together while bringing me joy.”

Annaliese: “I like to find a balance with pairing somewhat elaborate pieces with basic silhouettes and shades. These outfits definitely speak to that: I paired a basic tank top with a long silk skirt with red roses against a golden background, white jeans and a white linen shirt with a sheer velvet top, and black jeans with a pale green, lace lined, tie-up blouse with subtle floral detail.”

Joe: “Items worn in these photos are new (rarely), vintage, thrifted, or pre-owned gifts from people I am close to. I found particular inspiration this week… sources for some pieces: rag & bone, Levi’s, Nanushka, Zadig et Voltaire, Dries Van Noten, Desmond & Dempsey, vintage/unbranded, etc.”

Annaliese: “I love to enhance detail through the jewelry I wear - it is always the same three necklaces but each holds a memory, so I feel like I’m physically carrying those memories around with me. Brands featured in these photos include Realisation Par, Rouje, Levi’s, Na Nin, Rat and Boa.”
